Hargrove to Spearhead Literature Discussions at Starkville Public Library

In a fresh announcement, the Starkville Public Library has unveiled its planned Literature discussion series, set to start on September 3, 2024 and run until October 1, 2024. Acclaimed literary scholar Dr. Nancy D. Hargrove, an important figure at Mississippi State University will be leading these sessions.

Varied and Controversial Works Lined Up

The library promises its patrons a rich selection of works that will serve as touchpoints for the discussions. The first discussion scheduled for September 3 will revolve around Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story, “The Yellow Wallpaper”. This narrative recounts the psychological unraveling of the protagonist, a theme that is sure to instigate stimulating debates.

Up next on September 10, is Sylvia Plath’s only novel, “The Bell Jar.” An exploration of the semi-autobiographical journey of Esther Greenwood, it follows her descent into mental illness and her subsequent recovery. The raw emotion and intricate portrayal of mental health in this book make it an impactful reading experience.

Discussion Continues with Hard-hitting Drama and Poetry Choices

On September 17 and 24, the book club will examine Marsha Norman’s play, “’Night, Mother”. This heart-wrenching drama is known for its contentious subject matter and is sure to elicit robust conversations.

The last Tuesday (October 1), the group will tackle poems as chosen by its participants.
