Golden Triangle Dream Center Receives Funding for Community Development

In West Point, Mississippi, there resides a beacon of hope ready to embark on an ambitious project following a significant funding boost. The Golden Triangle Dream Center, a local community organization, has been selected as one of the eight recipients of this year’s Conserving Black Modernism Program grants. The specific aim of the Program is to conserve buildings and sites representative of Black culture, thereby preserving vital aspects of our shared history.

Revitalizing Mary Holmes College

According to Cole Bryan, the Executive Director of Golden Triangle Dream Center, the funding will be dedicated to the renovation of Mary Holmes College. The plan is to transform the deteriorating dormitories into a wonderful community space offering affordable accommodations. It is estimated that up to 90 families will benefit from this project.

Laying the Groundwork

The rejuvenation of Mary Holmes College has been a work in progress for the Center since 2019, when architect Roger Pryor initially mooted the idea. The Center subsequently hired architectural historian Alfred Willis to get the property listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, ensuring the preservation of this symbol of Black culture.

The Conserving Black Modernism Program, being the largest funding source in the country, surpasses $140 million in donations, making it an incredibly competitive selection process. It’s a notable achievement for Golden Triangle Dream Center and the town of West Point to receive these funds.

A Call for Tolerance and Empathy

The project may face opposition from those against affordable housing in their neighborhoods. Addressing these concerns, Bryan emphasized the importance of empathy and understanding for those in need of assistance. He urged people to consider the less fortunate and the importance of showing compassion.

What Lies Ahead

The planning process of the project is projected to take around 12 months, with the execution phase possibly extending until 2027. While it presents a significant challenge, the project also holds remarkable potential for community impact.

Future Implications

The revitalization of Mary Holmes College by the Golden Triangle Dream Center goes beyond urban development and affordable housing. It symbolizes a commitment to preserving cultural heritage and ensuring access to basic necessities for all members of society. By undertaking this project, the Center is not only preserving history but also contributing to a more inclusive and promising future for the people of West Point, Mississippi.
