In the vibrant town of Starkville, there’s a palpable buzz surrounding the Mississippi State women’s basketball team. As the season kicks off, the Bulldogs are making quite the splash with a string of three solid wins. While they haven’t yet faced a truly fierce opponent, it’s clear this team is showing serious potential, and fans are excited to see how the season unfolds.
This season has brought plenty of new faces to the roster, and what’s more thrilling is how each game introduces a new star. In their latest matchup, it was Terren Ward, a transfer from Georgia Southern, who stood out with a strong performance, racking up 14 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Such contributions are crucial as the team looks to establish its identity.
Among the most reliable new additions have been Eniya Russell and Madina Okot. Russell, a transfer from Kentucky, is making her mark as a starter after mainly being a bench player with the Wildcats. She mentioned, “I am pretty comfortable,” adding, “It all starts in practice. My teammates instill confidence in me, and the coaches do as well.” It’s no wonder that she’s emerging as a powerhouse, averaging a whopping 16.7 points per game!
Then there’s Okot, who has surprised even the most seasoned fans. With head coach Sam Purcell having hinted at her potential, she’s stepped up brilliantly, with averages of 10.7 points and an impressive 11.7 rebounds per game. It looks like she’s going to be a critical player in the post as the season goes on.
As exciting as the season has been so far, tomorrow presents a bigger challenge for the Bulldogs. They’re set to face UT Chattanooga at home — a game that is sure to test their mettle. Last season, the Mocs handed the Bulldogs a tough loss, defeating the then-ranked Bulldogs 59-53. With Jerkaila Jordan being a key scorer last year with 19 points, the team is hoping she’ll find her stride in this face-off.
One thing is for sure; the Bulldogs are ready for the challenge. Junior forward Debreasha Powe shared her thoughts, saying, “Based off last year, we know they are aggressive, and they are not going to lie down. They will fight. It is going to be a really good game to play. We are excited. We lost to them last year, so I guess you could call it a revenge tour.”
Coach Purcell outlined the importance of facing tough competition like Chattanooga. He noted, “They have some great kids who play the game the right way, so this will be the biggest challenge we have had to this point. And like last year, I don’t think I have to give any motivational speeches. For us to lose to them last year, I think their antennas are up, and they have to bring it for all four quarters. I’m thankful the game is at home.”
Purcell also emphasized the significance of scheduling teams like Chattanooga, stating, “I want regional games so that we can build some energy. I also want to play winning programs. They have a winning culture. We have to be ready to go, and even though they have a new head coach, she has a winning track record, so we have to be dialed in.”
As the Mississippi State Bulldogs prepare for this crucial matchup, the excitement in Starkville is palpable. With a blend of promising new talents and experienced players looking to make a statement, the team is eager to show what they’ve got.
