Exciting STEM Opportunities Light up Starkville
Starkville is buzzing with energy as the local school district embraces a fantastic initiative aimed at sparking students’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). The Starkville Oktibbeha Consolidated School District (SOCSD) recently hosted its much-anticipated Jacket Thrive Fall Intersession, where students were given the chance to dive headfirst into the world of STEM through engaging and interactive camps.
A Hands-On Learning Experience
This year’s Jacket Thrive Fall Intersession was a thrilling experience for students, combining creativity with technical skills. Young minds explored exciting topics like coding and robotics while taking part in hands-on activities. The event hosted two primary camps: Beginner Coding and Robotics for second through fourth graders and Challenge Accepted! for students in fifth to eighth grade.
During the camps, students worked together on various interactive projects, building balloon-powered vehicles and programming LEGO creations. This team-oriented approach encouraged them not only to learn technical skills but also to develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Exposing students to STEM concepts at an early age teaches them persistence and teamwork. Even when faced with challenges in coding, they learn to troubleshoot and collaborate, which are valuable skills in any field.
STEM Across the Curriculum
In Starkville, the drive for STEM education doesn’t stop at the intersession. The district is committed to embedding these essential subjects into the curriculum from the very beginning. The district’s MakerSpaces—hands-on environments designed specifically for exploration and teamwork—are available on every campus, right from elementary schools through to the high school.
These MakerSpaces provide young students with a rotating schedule of STEM activities, where they can experiment with building materials, manipulatives, and early coding exercises. Thoughtful design of these spaces allows students to tackle STEM concepts in engaging and collaborative ways.
Building a Future in STEM
As students advance through their education, their exposure to STEM becomes more specialized. At Partnership Middle School, various STEM-oriented clubs, including an engineering club supported by Mississippi State University, offer students pathways to explore these fields further.
When they reach high school, students are presented with dedicated pathways in engineering, digital media technology, and construction. This year, the high school introduced a two-year pathway in digital media technology, providing insights into exciting careers like broadcasting and podcasting.
Additionally, the high school’s engineering program, which receives support from a TVA grant, is focused on expanding opportunities for female students, promoting gender diversity in STEM fields.
