Excitement in Columbus as Under the Oaks Arts Festival Blooms

Columbus, Mississippi, recently came alive with creativity as the Under the Oaks Arts Festival took center stage at the Mississippi University for Women. Organized by the Columbus Arts Council in collaboration with the university, this year’s festival exceeded all expectations, nearly doubling the number of vendors from the previous year to a vibrant total of 36 unique vendors.

Supporting Local Talent

This festival is not just a celebration of art; it serves as a vital platform for local artists, including students, to showcase their talents and sell their work. Squeak Humphrey, a passionate alum of MUW’s art department and current member of the Columbus Arts Council, emphasized the significance of such events. “It’s a great opportunity for artists to sell their art,” she noted. “But the best part is that it also provides students the chance to gain real-world experience selling their pieces at a festival.”

The festival creates a bridge between seasoned artists and budding talents, allowing them to connect within the vibrant arts community. Many student artists had the unique opportunity to participate in what may have been their first experience selling their creations, a moment of joy and pride for them and their supportive mentors.

A Community Celebration of Art

Attendees expressed their delight in witnessing the artistic spirit alive in Columbus. Naomi Simpson, an enthusiastic artist herself, shared her feelings about the event: “As an artist, seeing the supportive network for art here is incredible. It’s wonderful to have a local art event that truly brings the community together.” Her words reflect the festival’s ability to foster connections and cultivate a sense of belonging among artists and art lovers alike.

Building for the Future

The festival not only celebrates current talents, but it also hints at exciting changes on the horizon for the Columbus Arts Council. With the anticipated arrival of a new director, the council is gearing up to expand its offerings to the community, promising an even brighter future for the arts in Columbus.

As the day unfolded under the sunny skies, vendors displayed their unique art pieces and handmade goods, drawing in curious visitors from all around. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement and enthusiasm, as people moved from one booth to another, chatting with artists, admiring their work, and purchasing cherished items to take home.

The Under the Oaks Arts Festival has successfully highlighted the importance of art in creating a tight-knit community. As artists continue to share their passions and stories, the hope is that more residents will embrace the vibrant arts culture in Columbus.
