Large-Scale Emergency Drill Set for Mississippi University for Women

Columbus, Miss. – The Mississippi University for Women, affectionately known as The W, is gearing up for a large-scale emergency drill. The drill is designed to put the university’s emergency preparedness to the test.

What to Expect

Taking place in the area between Pohl Gymnasium and Cromwell Communication Center, the drill will see a flurry of activity involving local law enforcement, first responders, nursing students, and faculty from The W. During the event, 10 Street South, 11th Street South, and Seventh Avenue will be closed off, adding to the real-life simulation aspect of the event.

Safety First!

The W’s Police Chief emphasized the importance of this exercise, stating that the goal is to test the university’s emergency preparedness. The university is committed to ensuring that its students, staff, and visitors are safe and well-prepared for any possible emergency situation.

Testing Emergency Systems

As part of the drill, the university will also be testing its tornado sirens and emergency alert system. This crucial part of the drill allows participants to familiarize themselves with the protocols that would be activated during a real emergency. The test serves as a genuine inquiry into how prepared the university would be under challenging circumstances.

Communication During Emergencies

In the event of a real emergency during this drill or afterward, students, staff, and visitors are reminded to call 911 or the campus police at (662) 241-777. If you must communicate about a true emergency situation, use the words “real life” to convey that it’s not a drill. Clear communication can be critical in effectively managing any emergency.

Getting Informed

With this drill on the horizon, it’s a good time for everyone affiliated with The W to familiarize themselves with the university’s emergency procedures and systems. Staying informed is key. Downloading news, weather, and TV apps to receive alerts and updates throughout the day, as well as signing up for email alerts, can help keep you in the loop about breaking news and important university updates.

Wrapping Up

This timely practice drill at Mississippi University for Women serves as a valuable reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness for everyone. Understanding how the university plans to respond to emergencies can make a difference.
