Mississippi State, Miss. – This week marked a thrilling development at Mississippi State University as the campus welcomed its first electric, self-driving shuttles. A ribbon-cutting ceremony held officially launched this innovative shuttle system, making Mississippi State a trailblazer in autonomous transportation.
The introduction of this cutting-edge technology has sparked excitement among the student body. One MSU student expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “I think it’s really cool that Mississippi State has something that’s so advanced and just sort of like a new thing.” Another student shared her impressions after seeing the shuttle for the first time: “It was super cool. I don’t know anywhere else that’s doing this, and I think it’s going to be a really big factor in hopefully making more students come here.”
Mississippi State University has partnered with Beep, Inc., a company specializing in autonomous bus systems, to bring these futuristic vehicles to the campus. The Executive Director of Transportation at MSU emphasized the significance of this initiative: “So, we’ve got them on campus as a pilot project that will last for three months and it’s really to test this autonomous technology that’s growing and evolving in transportation systems.”
This introduction marks the first time electric shuttles of this type have operated in Mississippi and within the Southeastern Conference. As the program unfolds, the university hopes to expand its reach. “The goal with this is if it’s a technology that proves to be worthy, that we expand this technology both in the city of Starkville and on campus,” was noted.
During the three-month pilot period, Mississippi State will closely evaluate whether the shuttle meets the needs of the students. Key considerations include, “We want it to be where it needs to be on schedule, that it works well with our traffic patterns, and our campus landscapes…” The importance of accommodating various campus dynamics, including foot traffic and events held in areas like the popular Cotton District, was emphasized.
The autonomous shuttles, which can hold up to 11 passengers, are designed to provide a smooth and efficient ride around campus. An important aspect of this initiative is safety: an attendant will be present on the shuttle during all rides to assist in case of any emergencies. This feature aims to reassure riders as they explore this innovative mode of transportation.
As Mississippi State navigates this exciting new addition to campus life, the community looks forward to seeing how the pilot program unfolds. The integration of self-driving technology not only represents progress in transportation but also showcases the university’s commitment to providing modern solutions for its students and staff.
