Starkville Celebrates Community Spirit with Award-Winning Dachshund Derby
Last week, the charming city of Starkville had every reason to celebrate as its beloved Dachshund Derby was recognized as the Best Large Festival of the Year at the Mississippi Tourism Association’s annual awards program. This year’s Dachshund Derby welcomed over 50,000 visitors who flooded the Cotton District with excitement and joy. People came from near and far, traveling from places like Denver and Wichita, Kansas, just to be part of this delightful festival. The event, organized by the Starkville Sausage Dog Society, is considered the world’s largest dachshund race, and it certainly lived up to its reputation.
A Festival with a Theme
The theme for this year’s derby was “Star Weens: The Derby Strikes Back,” cleverly celebrating Star Wars Day on May 4th. The atmosphere was electric as fans dressed up, waved lightsabers, and cheered on their favorite four-legged contestants. The event kicked off with a special grand marshal, Josh Hubbard, a standout in Mississippi State men’s basketball, who helped set the tone for a day filled with fun and community spirit. A beautiful flyover by local pilots added to the festive mood, followed by a stirring performance of the National Anthem by students from the MSU choral program.

This year, the festival featured a record-breaking 150 dogs competing in the races. Beyond the thrill of the races, there were also 64 local sponsors and donors, and 13 vendor booths showcasing an array of products and tasty treats. The sense of community was palpable, and all these efforts helped raise over $40,000 for the Oktibbeha County Humane Society. It’s heartwarming to see such solidarity in supporting local animal welfare.
