CPD Tops Starkville Police for Hardwood Tournament Title
In a thrilling basketball contest, the Columbus Police Department (CPD) clinched the title of the ‘Hooping with First Responders’ tournament, overcoming the Starkville Police Department (SPD) by a 38-27 scoreline on Saturday in Starkville. As part of the championship game, the two police departments showcased skill, tenacity, and a commitment to community service.
Halftime Comeback
The stark tension at halftime was palpable, with Starkville PD leading Columbus PD by a narrow margin of 19-16. However, the Columbus police department assembled a comeback strategy. They came together at halftime and designed a game plan that proved successful in the second half. Despite efforts by SPD to substitute players, the attempt did not yield the desired result due to sufficient players on Starkville’s side.
A Definitive Win and a Goal
CPD managed to turn the game around and secured the tournament win with a score of 38-27. The tournament plays a pivotal role in raising funds for National Night Out, fostering neighborhood unity and police-community partnerships. The annual event will host festivities on August 6th at the Sportsplex.
The tournament aims to offer first responders a fun break from work while promoting fitness. This year, five agencies competed, with CPD emerging as the victor. Looking forward, there is excitement about welcoming more local agencies to participate in future tournaments.
Looking Forward to Next Year
Despite the loss, there is excitement about the prospect of more agencies joining the tournament next year. Both CPD and SPD are eager to compete again and make the event even more significant. The CPD was awarded the trophy amidst promises of an even more spectacular event next year. In a light-hearted banter, there were promises of a rematch and a competitive spirit for the future competitions.
