COLUMBUS, Miss. – Celebrating Community Heroes at Cook Elementary
There’s a buzz of excitement at Cook Elementary School as students don their best superhero costumes for homecoming week. This week, students have the wonderful opportunity to meet local heroes who make a significant impact on their lives.
A Day to Remember
On this special day, the fire department graced the school with their presence. A lively second-grade teacher expressed her excitement: “Today, we had the fire department come out so that the kids can see the big trucks, get hats, ask questions, and just experience what it’s like to live the life of a firefighter for one day.”
This hands-on experience allows first and second graders to engage with heroes in their community directly. For four to six weeks, students dive into learning about various professions that influence and support their lives daily. “Anyone in the community that plays a major part, whether their job is to keep us safe, they’re educators, or even those who cook and do our hair, are part of this learning,” was shared.
Inspiring Future Generations
What makes this program truly special is how it inspires young minds. It was noted, “Seeing people from the community inspires the students and helps them envision what they can become one day.” This initiative is about fostering dreams.
