Exciting News from Columbus: The W Shines with Literacy Excellence!

Columbus, Mississippi has some wonderful news to share! The School of Education at The W received a prestigious award, recognizing its commitment to literacy education. This comes from the Mississippi Department of Education, which awarded The W the Mississippi Science of Reading Excellence Award. Quite a title, right? But what does that really mean for our community and our future teachers?

What is the Science of Reading?

The Science of Reading isn’t just about teaching kids to read; it’s a comprehensive approach that blends research from child brain development, psychology, language evolution, and the importance of reading skills in educational success. Studies show that kids who are prepared for kindergarten tend to stay on track, while those who start behind often struggle later in school. It’s all about setting the groundwork for success!

As an Assistant Professor of Education at The W explained, “The research backs it. There are studies that show the connection of students that start kindergarten. If they’re ready for kindergarten, they tend to stay on track. But those that start behind typically stay behind.” This insight is crucial for teachers in training, as it empowers them with the knowledge to help students excel throughout their academic journey.

Ensuring Future Success

One of the most significant aspects of this award is that it emphasizes the preparation of teacher candidates. According to Ford, “What we are doing is ensuring our teacher candidates have the knowledge and skills to set the trends that don’t just impact success in the classroom, but also in their families, jobs, and their whole community.” This initiative goes beyond just reading; it’s about building successful lives and bright futures for our children.

Support Beyond the Classroom

Additionally, The W is showcasing its Center for Education Support. This center is dedicated to assisting teachers in their classrooms, providing a fantastic resource for educational professionals. This support system ensures that those teaching our young learners have the tools and backing to help every child. With over 80% of recent Elementary Education graduates from The W now employed in Mississippi Public Schools, it’s clear that this program is making a difference!

Community Engagement

This topic of literacy and education impacts all of us, from parents to educators and beyond. It’s a community effort to ensure that our children are well-equipped for their futures. There’s always something exciting going on in local education and community engagement!

This award is a sign of progress and dedication to literacy that can shape the future of education in Columbus. It’s a great time for our community, and it will be interesting to see how these budding educators will continue to support and uplift our schools.

Celebrating this achievement highlights the commitment to education and literacy for all!
