Columbus Prepares for a Unique Art and Antiques Weekend Featuring Victorian Mourning Themes

Columbus Readies for a Spooktacular Art and Antiques Weekend

Columbus is gearing up for a weekend that promises a delightful blend of art, history, and just a hint of the eerie. This year’s Art ‘N Antiques show is diving into the world of Victorian mourning, providing a unique twist. The event is set to run from Thursday evening through Saturday, and it’s part of an exciting new collaboration with the Preservation Society of Columbus (PSC).

A Hauntingly Good Time

Traditionally held for over 40 years, this beloved show has become a staple thanks to the efforts of the Columbus-Lowndes Convention and Visitors Bureau. With new partners in the mix, attendees can expect an imaginative twist on past events. Frances Glenn, the tourism director at the CVB, mentioned that there will be some returning dealers but also lots of new ones that have never been to Columbus.

The festivities kick off on Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Rosenzweig Arts Center, followed by the PSC’s Victorian Mourning Party at the Stephen D. Lee Home from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.. This year, the theme is steeped in the rich customs of Victorian mourning, so traditional attire is encouraged!

Dressing the Part

The Victorians had all sorts of strange mourning traditions, dressing for different periods of time depending on their relationship to the deceased. Expect elegant black gowns, lacy veils, and perhaps a tasteful splash of jewelry made from the hair of loved ones. There will even be a special exhibit featuring fascinating pieces related to these customs—quite a treat for history buffs and curious minds alike!

Interactive Events Await

The fun continues throughout the weekend. On Friday, starting at 9 a.m., renowned fashion expert Danielle Reaves will give a presentation focused on 18th and 19th-century attire. Later in the day, attendees can venture through local homes during the “Ghost Tales Home Tour,” guided by enthusiastic homeowners eager to share local legends and ghost stories. The evening wraps up with a lively “Boos and Brews” pub crawl, promising an entertaining night in downtown Columbus.

Ghost Tales in Catfish Alley

Saturday features the highly anticipated “Ghost Tales in Catfish Alley”, starting at 6:30 p.m.. PSC president Jace Ferraez is particularly excited about this event, where historical reenactors will portray influential figures from Columbus’s vibrant past, bringing the stories of Catfish Alley back to life. Live music will also accompany the tours, setting an exhilarating atmosphere until 9:30 p.m..

Shop Local and Celebrate

As if the art and history weren’t enough, downtown businesses will join in the merriment with their annual Christmas open house on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.. It’s a perfect opportunity to kick-start holiday shopping while supporting local businesses.

All these events are free to attend, but reservations are needed for the Victorian Mourning Party and the Ghost Tales in Catfish Alley by sending an email to RSVP@your-email.com.

Gather friends and family for a weekend filled with fun and discovery right here in Columbus! Art ‘N Antiques promises a memorable experience, whether you’re deep into history or just looking for a good time!
