STARKVILLE, Miss. — The Chattanooga women’s basketball team is heading to Starkville, Mississippi, to challenge the Mississippi State Bulldogs in a non-conference matchup. The game is set for Sunday at 3 p.m. ET (2 p.m. CT), and fans are buzzing with excitement!
Last season, the Mocs pulled off a stunning upset over the Bulldogs, defeating the then-No. 21 ranked Mississippi State team with a thrilling score of 59-53. With that unforgettable victory still fresh in their minds, the Mocs (2-2) are eager to deliver another surprise against the Bulldogs, who currently boast a record of 3-0 this season.
Currently, Mississippi State may not be ranked like they were last year, but they are receiving votes in both the AP Top 25 and USA Today Coaches polls. A win for the Mocs would not only be impressive but also boost their confidence immensely as they continue their campaign this year.
The game will be streamed online via SEC Network+ and ESPN+. Live radio coverage will be available on WFLI 96.1 FM/100.3 FM/1070 AM. For those who love stats, live updates will be available on the Mississippi State website, or on the Chattanooga women’s basketball schedule page.
The Mocs are coming off a tough loss against Troy University, where they fell 76-66. However, they will look to harness their strong road game success, having won one out of one games played away from home this season. Notably, their defense has been impressive, leading the Southern Conference with statistics that include a staggering 22.0% three-point defense, forcing an average of 21.8 turnovers per game, and attempting over 24 three-pointers each game.
A standout player for Chattanooga has been Sigrun Olafsdottir, who has combined for 23 points, 17 rebounds, 11 assists, and eight steals in her last two games. Additionally, sophomore Caia Elisaldez is making waves after scoring a career-high of 15 points against Troy, contributing to her solid average of over 10 points in three out of four games this season.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs have kicked off their season with a 100-56 victory over Memphis. Following that, they easily defeated Alcorn State and Alabama State, bringing their record to a perfect 3-0. Key contributors for the Bulldogs include Madina Okot, who is averaging a double-double with 10.7 points and 11.7 rebounds per game, and Eniya Russell, who leads the team with an impressive average of 16.7 points.
The Mocs and Bulldogs have faced off seven times previously, with Mississippi State currently leading the series 4-3. Chattanooga’s lone victory on Mississippi State’s home turf came back in 1985, adding a bit of historical flair to this matchup.
