STARKVILLE, Miss. – The air is buzzing with excitement as football season kicks off at Mississippi State University. But while the players prepare to hit the gridiron, there’s another vibrant team taking the field, and they are just as passionate about their craft. We’re talking about none other than The Famous Maroon Band, a staple of school spirit and tradition for over 122 years!

A Band Like No Other

Recently, at a local gathering, the Associate Director of Bands took some time to share what makes the Famous Maroon Band so special—beyond just their marching skills. Did you know that the band is the largest university band in Mississippi? With many enthusiastic members, it includes not just a marching band, but also four concert bands, a jazz band, a basketball pep band, and a community band. That’s a lot of music and rhythm coming from one university!

Rooted in Community

What’s even more heartwarming is that most of the band members hail from right in the local area. “We do a lot of recruiting, both in state and regionally,” was shared. “Most of our students come from either Mississippi or the immediate surrounding states, but we have students that come from all over the country.” It’s great to see the talent being nurtured within the community while also attracting individuals from afar, giving the band a diverse and rich musical tapestry.

Beyond Music: Community Involvement

The Famous Maroon Band isn’t just about fantastic performances; they also have a heart for community service. Band members actively participate in volunteer activities throughout the area. The band’s commitment to excellence was recently showcased when the Collegiate Mass Band featured current band members and one Famous Maroon alum during the 80th Anniversary of D-Day commemoration.
