More than just driving: Bus drivers prepare to head back to school

The first day of school marked the return of students and teachers to various districts around the area, but this exciting time wasn’t just for those in the classroom. School bus drivers were also marking their come back to work. Reliable and capable bus drivers play a vital role in the beginning and end of thousands of students’ school days.
One needs more than just a basic driving license to join the ranks of dedicated school bus drivers. According to veteran bus drivers from the Starkville Oktibbeha School District, potential drivers require around three months to complete certification procedures. Requirements include obtaining a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and successfully completing an array of specialized driving and safety classes.
More than just drivers: Role models and caretakers
Anna Guntharp, the Assistant Superintendent, emphasized the necessity for bus drivers to have skills that extend beyond operating a vehicle. The drivers must successfully manage every aspect of their young passengers’ behavior while they’re under their care.
Guntharp stated, “We understand the importance of training our drivers on managing student behavior on the bus. The positive relationships they establish with students from the moment they step onto the bus until they return home can make a significant impact on students’ overall school experience.”
Guntharp also added that drivers received training on implementing the B.U.S program, which stands for ‘Be responsible, Use Respect, and Stay Safe’.
Samp Wilson, a revered bus driver with six years of experience, expressed his excitement about returning to work. “You take a look at your route roster, study it, and familiarize yourself with the students you’ll be transporting. Then, you plan your schedule to ensure that every student is picked up and dropped off on time,” said Wilson.
An incentive for good behavior – the B.U.S. program
Good student behavior is beneficial to not just the drivers, but also fellow students, and the B.U.S. program serves as an incentive for students to manifest positive conduct on the bus. Students who consistently exhibit the values of the B.U.S. program will have the opportunity to enter a raffle draw with money prizes. Guntharp stressed on the ultimate goal of the program, “Our aim is to reduce distractions and create a safe, positive experience for our students when they are riding to and from school.”
With school in full swing and programs like B.U.S. in place, parents can rest assured knowing their children are in capable hands. It’s not just about driving for these local heroes – it’s about ensuring every child starts and ends their school day on a positive note.
