Starkville First United Methodist Church Hosts Packed ‘Attic Sale’
The Starkville First United Methodist Church opened its doors on Saturday for a massive ‘Attic Sale,’ bringing throngs of shoppers together in search of affordable household items, furniture, and more. The community event hosted in Starkville, Mississippi, boasts a wide array of goods at competitive prices, prompting both regulars and newcomers to peruse the troves of second-hand items donated to support the church and its community services.
An Array of Goods for Every Household
The ‘Attic Sale’ offered more than just a typical yard sale, featuring everything from furniture, kitchen appliances, and bookbags to clothing, books, and toys. Every year, the sale attracts a diverse crowd due to its unique mixing pot of both standard basics and unique treasures, prompting early birds to line up even before the sale begins.
Church assistant financial manager, Lynn Berch, emphasized the value of the event for low-income families who can purchase essentials at a considerably reduced cost. She stated, “You are going to go somewhere and pay $300 for something when you can just come here and buy a lot for more your buck.”
A ‘Double-Edged Sword’
Jacque Tisdale, Co-chair of the attic sale, discussed the dual benefit of the event, stating, “I think it’s a double-edged sword because it helps the person who donates the stuff because it gets it out of their way.” She went on to say, “And the people that need can come buy it at a discount.”
Her sentiments reflected the purpose of the event: to facilitate a space where community members can not only ‘spring clean’ their homes but also support their fellow neighbors. The event becomes a win-win, enabling people to declutter while allowing others to find the items they need at affordable costs.
Local Community Support
The annual ‘Attic Sale’ has become a beloved tradition in the Starkville community, fostering a genuine atmosphere of support, unity, and shared resourcefulness. All the proceeds directly contribute towards financing the church’s ministry and helping those struggling financially within the community.
The event is always hosted in August every year, with the day starting early and only ending after every item finds a new owner. It reflects a community spirit that has deep roots in a continued passion for uplifting and supporting those around them.
