WASHINGTON – In a tragic incident, fireworks accidentally caused a massive fire in a southeast Washington, D.C. apartment complex on a Tuesday afternoon, leaving a firefighter injured and dozens of residents homeless. The blaze started around 2 p.m. in the 2600 block of Bowen Road’s residential area.
The firefighters arrived on the scene to smoke and flames billowing from the roof of the four-story building. The conflagration spread rapidly to adjacent structures in the complex making firefighting efforts extremely challenging. The intensity of the fire triggered an evacuation of all firefighters from within the buildings, prioritizing their safety.
The quick response by the firefighters and rescue teams successfully saved a resident from the burning apartment. The rescued individual was transported to an undisclosed nearby hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and other non-life-threatening injuries. Unfortunately, a firefighter also suffered injuries during the operation. The injuries were not considered life-threatening.
In a heartwarming moment amidst the turmoil, crews were successful in saving a puppy from one of the burning apartment units. Despite the successful rescues, the fire resulted in a whopping 76 residents displaced from their homes. Local Red Cross, D.C. Homeland Security & Emergency Management, and the Mayor’s Office of Community Relations and Services are assisting the traumatised and displaced residents.
As D.C. units were grappling to contain the blaze, firefighters from Montgomery County, Prince George’s County, Arlington, and Alexandria responded to support and handled other emergency calls within the District.
While the residents are coming to grips with the scale of the disaster, the cause of the fire was confirmed to be accidental ignition from fireworks. Further inquiries to ascertain the detailed circumstances related to the fireworks are ongoing.
