This past Saturday, the charming city of Starkville, Mississippi, was buzzing with energy and wagging tails as it hosted the American Kennel Club Diving Dogs Premier Cup at Mississippi State University. More than 40 talented dogs from across the United States splashed their way into this exciting event, displaying their impressive diving skills and charming personalities.
Among the competitors was the remarkable seven-year-old All-American dog, Boom Boom, who truly stole the spotlight. Owned by Laura O’Donnell, Boom Boom wowed the audience by expertly diving from a height of 16 feet and successfully catching an apparatus mid-air. This talented pooch showcased her skills in the air retrieve discipline, leaving everyone in awe of her athleticism and precision.
The competition featured two thrilling disciplines: air retrieve and distance. In the air retrieve discipline, dogs leaped off the dock, aiming to catch a toy while soaring through the air. Meanwhile, in the distance discipline, participants measured how far their furry companions could jump from the dock, with judges carefully noting the distance at which the base of the dog’s tail met the water. The excitement of each leap had spectators cheering as loyal canines jumped to impress.
Among the competitors was Danielle Snyder and her stunning Borzoi, Talia, who had a hesitant start but ultimately managed a fantastic leap of 20 feet 2 inches on her second attempt. Another standout competitor was Kelly Dolan with her Cocker Spaniel, Tate, who traveled all the way from Houston, Texas. Tate’s journey to the diving competition began with training to swim due to fears of hurricanes, but he quickly took to the challenge of dock diving. He proudly jumped 16 feet 2 inches in the lap dog division, much to his owner’s delight.
Not to be outdone, Kevin and Denise Zondlak, who traveled from Michigan to join in the fun, showcased their beloved black lab, Whiskey. This impressive pup soared an astonishing 29 feet 3 inches, far exceeding his personal best and showcasing the bond he shares with his owners through the sport.
As the day progressed, it became clear that the AKC Diving Dogs Premier Cup was much more than just a competition. Participants shared a sense of camaraderie and joy as they spent quality time with their furry friends and fellow competitors. The event was organized by Steve Powell, the owner of North American Diving Dogs, who ensured everything ran smoothly, providing the necessary equipment and support for those involved.
The thrilling competition was not only a treat for those in attendance but also captured the hearts of viewers at home as it was televised on ESPN and presented by Cosequin.
