Exciting Times in Starkville: Mylan Williams Joins MSU’s ACCESS Program

Starkville, Mississippi is buzzing with excitement as Mississippi State University (MSU) celebrates a significant milestone in inclusion and education. The university’s groundbreaking ACCESS Program has opened its doors once again to offer hope and opportunity to students with intellectual disabilities and developmental disabilities. This program, which started 15 years ago, is the first of its kind in the state, and it serves as a beacon of support for students looking to thrive academically, socially, and personally.

A Celebration Like No Other

Recently, one such student, Mylan Williams, hit a remarkable milestone when he received his acceptance into the ACCESS Program. To mark this momentous occasion, Mylan’s mother, Tashanda White, organized a wonderful celebration that brought family and friends together in joy. Mylan had been eagerly waiting to open his acceptance letter, which Tashanda had kept sealed since it arrived in January. When the moment finally arrived, laughter and cheers erupted as the family donned their MSU shirts, creating a heartwarming scene filled with love and excitement.

The Power of Acceptance

The ACCESS Program isn’t just about academics; it’s designed to focus on career development, independent living, and socialization. It aims to prepare students to lead independent lives and find meaningful employment. Statistics show that while students with intellectual disabilities nationally face an employment rate of less than 20%, graduates of programs like ACCESS experience a remarkable success rate with over 75% securing employment.

Chris Dallager, the director of the Disability Resource Center and ACCESS Program, highlights that acceptance goes a long way for students and their families. This program not only opens doors but also creates a nurturing and supportive community. Mylan’s acceptance into this initiative symbolizes hope not just for him but also for countless others who strive for independence and success in life after high school.

Encouragement for Parents

Tashanda White is also eager to share her experience with other parents of children with disabilities. She encourages them to conduct thorough research and consider educational opportunities beyond high school. The supportive environment provided by the ACCESS Program is invaluable for personal growth and skill development.

What Lies Ahead for ACCESS

The excitement doesn’t stop with Mylan! The ACCESS Program is continuously working to enhance its offerings and facilities. A new building, the Jim and Thomas Duff Center, is currently under construction and is slated to open in Fall 2025. This center will be equipped with specialized facilities to foster independent living skills and provide a rich academic environment.

Another exciting development in the program is the inspiring story of Spencer Kirkpatrick, another ACCESS student who was recently crowned MSU’s homecoming king. His achievement is a testament to the supportive atmosphere of MSU and the incredible potential the ACCESS Program cultivates within its students.

Growing Community and Inclusive Vision

Currently, the ACCESS Program serves 33 students and aims to expand its reach to 36 students in the upcoming year. The goal is to integrate these students into university life, alongside their degree-seeking peers, creating a rich tapestry of experiences that benefits everyone involved.

As the ACCESS Program continues to grow, its commitment to providing long-term support for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities remains steadfast. With a strong focus on career opportunities, independent living, and fostering social connections, MSU is leading the way in creating a positive future for all students.
