Discovering Starkville: A Journey from Coast to Bar Manager
Welcome to the charming town of Starkville, Mississippi, where community spirit thrives and stories of unique individuals unfold. One such tale is that of Josh Haight, the bar manager at the cozy establishment, Two Brothers Smoked Meats. With a life filled with adventure and intriguing life twists, Haight’s journey has finally led him to call Starkville home.
From the Northwest to the South
Born in the beautiful state of Washington, Haight was no stranger to constant movement. Thanks to his father’s career in the military, he moved frequently, experiencing life in various places. However, it was in a tiny town in North Carolina called Spiveys Corner—which boasts a population of around 500—that Haight spent much of his youth.
“People ask me where I’m from, and I generally just say North Carolina,” Haight chuckles, sharing memories of a town that just recently welcomed its first post office. It was there, near Fort Bragg (now Camp Liberty), where he grew up with his extended family, including loving uncles, aunts, and grandparents.
A Unique Passion for Sports
While many kids in rural America lean towards football or basketball, young Josh was inspired by his father’s roots in Seattle. He discovered a passion for ice hockey, dedicating a solid 17 years to the sport. “Not a lot of people around here know that about me,” he adds with a playful grin. His commitment even led him to compete at the college level, showcasing just how unique his upbringing was.
A New Start
After earning his degree, Haight stepped into a career as a high school teacher. Unfortunately, his dreams of educating young minds were affected by the pandemic. “COVID put a bad taste in my mouth,” he admits. Haight described the rapid shifts between online, hybrid, and in-person teaching as challenging. Seeking change, he took a leap of faith that led him first to bustling Miami and later back to North Carolina.
However, destiny kicked in when a friend suggested he consider moving to Starkville. That recommendation turned out to be a game-changer.
A Warm Welcome in Starkville
Once he settled in Starkville, Haight quickly became a beloved part of the community. He joined the team at Two Brothers Smoked Meats, where he carved out a niche for himself as the bar manager. His role extends beyond just pouring drinks; he lends a helping hand to the management of The Older Brother, another local venue owned by the same folks.
“Since moving here, I’ve felt at home,” Haight expresses, highlighting the welcoming nature of the Starkville community. He particularly appreciates the camaraderie among locals, especially during Mississippi State events. “Everybody’s inviting me out, asking me to come hang out, especially during baseball season,” he says, capturing the true essence of a community that feels like family.
Looking Ahead
As for what the future holds, Haight is content right where he is. He thoroughly enjoys being part of this tight-knit environment and is eager for others to join him in experiencing the charm of Starkville. Whether you’re looking for a great meal or a delightful drink, you’ll find a familiar face in Josh at The Older Brother, where he’s always happy to connect.
