Excitement Builds in Starkville as MSU Basketball Season Approaches

STARKVILLE — The air is thick with anticipation as Mississippi State basketball gears up for the new season, which kicks off next week. The women’s team, under the bright leadership of Head Coach Sam Purcell, is about to embark on Year 3, and it promises to be a significant one filled with fresh faces, returning talent, and a strong sense of community.

New Beginnings and Yearly Themes

During a recent Starkville Rotary Club gathering at the Hilton Garden Inn, Purcell shared his thoughts on the evolving landscape of college athletics. His mantra for this season is “Own It,” a phrase that encapsulates not just the players’ approach to tough on-court challenges but also the broader journey of the game itself. “There’s a lot of good in the game, and that’s what I choose to focus on,” showcasing his optimistic outlook.

Celebrating Past Triumphs

Reflecting on his first two seasons, Purcell proudly recounted significant moments, including a solid performance in the 2022-23 season that reached the Round of 32. He also noted last season’s struggles, which, while disappointing, boasted memorable highlights, such as their surprising defeat of the defending national champions, LSU. “We’ve been through ups and downs, but we continue to make strides,” beaming with pride for his team and the support from the community.

A Strong Support System

Purcell took the opportunity to shine a light on Mississippi State’s impressive attendance record, noting that the Bulldogs have ranked in the top 20 nationally for attendance for nine consecutive years. “We own it. It’s huge to have that support,” highlighting the importance of fan engagement, particularly during tough times. With lower bowl season tickets already sold out and upper-level tickets still available, the excitement among fans is palpable.

Key Players Returning

As the new season approaches, the spotlight turns to some of the Bulldogs’ standout returning players. JerKaila Jordan and Debreasha Powe are among those Purcell is counting on to lead the team in the upcoming year. Jordan, entering her fourth season, has earned recognition as “one of the best players in the country.” After averaging 16.2 points per game last season, her leadership will be crucial as the team integrates several new transfer players.

“She loves it here,” referring to Jordan’s deep commitment to the program. “She has a sour taste from last year, where we just missed the NCAA tournament by one game,” which only adds to her determination to make her final year count.

Exciting New Coaches Joining the Team

Purcell also welcomed new faces on the coaching staff, following the departure of two assistants who took head coaching positions. Notable among the new additions is former MSU star Victoria Vivians, who associated her name with the WNBA and brings invaluable experience. Purcell expressed his excitement about Vivians’ presence, emphasizing her role as a mentor for players aspiring to reach similar heights in their basketball careers. “She’s a grinder, and she’s excited to see you all,” he said enthusiastically.

Looking Forward to the Season Opener

The Bulldogs are set to face off against Memphis at home on November 7, an opener that promises to be much tougher than in years past. Purcell urged the community to bring the same level of enthusiasm for this game as they do for the big ones, citing the glory days of the program. “I want to recapture that energy,” as he reflected on the passionate support that has endured through difficult seasons.

A Bright Future Ahead

As the team prepares to take the court, it’s evident that excitement is high in Starkville. With a strong leader like Purcell at the helm, a talented roster, and the unwavering support of the community, the upcoming basketball season is poised to be a thrilling ride.
