COLUMBUS, Miss. – A Helping Hand for Young Men
Adolescence can be a challenging time for many, filled with ups and downs that can sometimes feel overwhelming. Recognizing this, a group of concerned men in Columbus has stepped up to lend a hand to the city’s young men. They call themselves the Men of Compassion, and their mission is simple yet impactful: to provide guidance and support to the youth during these formative years.
Engaging the Community’s Youth
This week, the Men of Compassion have been visiting Columbus Middle and High Schools, engaging with students and offering a network of support. Their goal is to show these young men that they are not alone when faced with tough choices. Rather than just talking at them, the group emphasizes the importance of listening and understanding what the boys in their communities want. By fostering open dialogues, they aim to help the youth navigate the often rocky path of growing up.
Tackling Youth Violence
One of the primary aims of the Men of Compassion is to combat the issue of youth violence in the city. They understand that many conflicts arise from misunderstandings or lack of communication, so they focus on teaching conflict resolution skills. At the helm of this initiative is Willie Sanders, the Vice President of Men of Compassion. He fervently believes in the significance of having positive role models during adolescence. He reminisced about mentors from his own life, such as coaches George Turner and Henry Dismukes, who played pivotal roles in his journey. With their support, he was able to stay on the right path, and now he aims to do the same for today’s youth.
Community Involvement
The Men of Compassion initiative is sponsored by the City of Columbus Community Outreach, but they are constantly on the lookout for more hands to help. Volunteers are needed to join this important cause and contribute to making a difference in the lives of young men.
