Coaching Excellence Celebration

Exciting News from Starkville: Dr. Jerrial Dawson Joins Tomorrow’s 25 Coaching Fellowship

In Starkville, there’s a buzz of excitement following the announcement that Dr. Jerrial Dawson, the Assistant Boys Basketball Coach and 9th Grade Principal at Starkville High School, has been selected for the prestigious Mississippi Excellence in Coaching Fellowship. This program, often referred to as “Tomorrow’s 25,” is a unique professional development opportunity aimed at nurturing emerging leaders in high school and middle school athletics.

A New Chapter in Coaching

Dr. Dawson’s selection for this esteemed fellowship was finalized in early August, and he will join a diverse group of twenty-five coaching professionals from across Mississippi. Over the next year, they will participate in a series of fifteen meetings, both virtually and in person. This initiative is presented through a collaboration between the Mississippi Association of Coaches (MAC), the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA), and the University of Mississippi School of Education (UMSOE).

“We will all be growing together,” Dr. Dawson shared enthusiastically. “I’m a continuous learner, and being able to learn from other coaches is so valuable, as well as sharing wisdom.” His perspective on the fellowship highlights its focus on building relationships and fostering a supportive environment where everyone can thrive.

What Makes Tomorrow’s 25 Special?

The mission of the Mississippi Excellence in Coaching Fellowship is not just about honing athletic skills; it seeks to invest in emerging leaders who can promote a holistic approach to coaching. The fellowship emphasizes essential qualities like leadership, resilience, empathy, and responsibility. Dr. Dawson’s participation indicates his commitment to these values, and he aims to bring these principles to the forefront of his coaching and educational practices.

Superintendent Dr. Tony McGee expressed his pride in Dr. Dawson’s selection, thanking him for the substantial impact he has already made within the district. “His career as a coach and in school administration has positioned him as a leader across the state on both the court and in the classroom,” Dr. McGee noted.

From the Court to the Classroom

Dr. Dawson joined the Starkville High School team in July, bringing a wealth of experience from previous roles, including his time as Head Boys Basketball Coach at Morton High School. Despite stepping away from coaching for two years to focus on his administration career and pursue a doctorate, the opportunity at Starkville reignited his passion for the sport. “It was a Godsend,” he reflected on his return to coaching alongside Head Coach Anthony Carlyle.

With over six years of head coaching experience, Dr. Dawson is excited not only for his own growth but for the collaborative relationship he shares with Coach Carlyle. Their longstanding friendship allows them to bounce ideas off each other and strive for excellence together.

Building a Strong Culture

Both coaches recognize the importance of building a positive culture within sports programs and schools. Dr. Dawson highlighted the necessity of viewing coaching as more than just a sport but as an integral part of shaping school culture. “You can change the atmosphere and build the culture of a school,” he asserted. “If you’re not building culture, your program is limited.” This insight is vital, especially in educational settings where the impact of athletics transcends the court.

Dr. McGee echoes this sentiment, noting that Dr. Dawson’s goal-centered approach is instrumental in contributing to the excellence they strive for within the Jacket Family. Every student’s experience, whether they are athletes or not, is enriched by Dawson’s commitment to creating lasting lessons through sports and education.

Excitement for the Future

The Starkville community can look forward to a vibrant sports culture under Dr. Dawson’s guidance. His drive for excellence and dedication to student development cements his role as a significant figure in building a legacy of success and unity within the district. “I’m excited about the expectation of excellence and being part of a community that values growth,” he commented.

As Starkville heads into a new chapter with Dr. Dawson at the helm of both athletics and education, the future seems bright for the student-athletes and everyone involved in creating a strong and inspirational community.
