Florida Gators Roar Back to Life in Starkville
In what felt like a much-needed breath of fresh air for the Florida Gators, the team pulled off a commendable victory against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. With the pressure building around head coach Billy Napier, the Gators answered the bell and secured a 45-28 win on the road, ending a frustrating seven-game losing streak against FBS foes.
A Strong Start Turned into a Calm Finish
Leading the charge was quarterback Graham Mertz, who showcased his talent by throwing for three touchdowns and even rushing in for another. His impressive performance propelled the Gators to a commanding tempo, allowing them to dominate the field with a total of 503 yards of offense. Mertz completed an astounding 93 percent of his passes, going 19 of 21 for 201 yards, while fellow quarterback DJ Lagway also made waves by completing all seven of his attempts for 76 yards.
“It’s good to win on the road in this league, and this can be a challenging place to play,” Napier said post-game. “We have more work to do. We won, but we are very much a work in progress.”
Bulldogs’ Defensive Struggles
On the other side of the field, the Bulldogs’ defense faced significant challenges. The Gators managed to score a touchdown on all but three of their drives, showcasing an offense that averaged an impressive 6.3 yards per carry, collecting 226 rushing yards on 36 attempts. It wasn’t until quarterback Blake Shapen ran for a touchdown that they started to close the gap, finishing the first half 28-14.
Despite their challenges, the Bulldogs showed resilience and managed to score again in the third quarter, narrowing it down to a 28-21 deficit with a touchdown catch from Jordan Mosley. However, a pivotal moment came early in the fourth when they failed to convert on fourth down at the 1-yard line, effectively snuffing out any comeback hopes.

As the game wrapped up, Mississippi State’s coach, Jeff Lebby, expressed his optimism: “We’ve got a choice to make, and the choice is up to each and every one of us. There will be great relief, great energy, and great confidence in how the guys are getting coached.”
Offensive Movements
Shapen finished his day with 13 completions on 21 attempts, totaling 140 yards and a touchdown, along with 12 carries for 32 yards before leaving the game with an apparent injury in the fourth quarter. Backup Michael Van Buren stepped in and had a respectable showing as well, going 7 of 13 for 100 yards. Running backs Davon Booth and Johnnie Daniels were also essential for the Bulldogs, combining for 29 carries, 178 rushing yards, and two touchdowns.
